Current news about exhibitions

Every year, Annantalo seeks exhibition proposals for the galleries on the second floor. The exhibition periods usually last about 4 months and typically take place between the end of the year and the spring.

The exhibition or work can be representative of any art form. Both individual artists and work groups can apply, either with a finished work or a work in progress, or with a set of works. It is also possible to compile a group exhibition of the proposals.

The next application period is next spring. The exact date will be announced on Annantalo's website.

You can read more about the previous call for applications here.

Exhibitions at Annantalo

Exhibitions are carried out in cooperation with various artists, organisations and schools. The exhibitions have an artistic educational purpose and are related to the world of children or young people – the exhibitions or works do not have to be made specifically for children.

The main target groups of Annantalo's exhibitions are early childhood education (4–6 years old) and primary school (7–12 years old). In addition, we offer exhibition experiences for young people. The exhibition content may be aimed at a specific target group, but it is worth noting that exhibitions may be visited by people of all ages.

The themes arising from an exhibition are often discussed as part of Annantalo's arts education and teaching. In connection with the exhibitions, Annantalo organises open programmes, workshops, guided tours and events. Annantalo's exhibitions showcase the art of both professional artists and children and young people.

Exhibitions curated by children and young people

At Annantalo, children and young people have the opportunity to participate in the selection of exhibition content. For this purpose, Annantalo has established a student jury intended to familiarise itself with various aspects of exhibition production, especially curating exhibition content. The jury is involved in the selection of gallery exhibitions, for example.

The composition of the student jury varies from term to term. It includes students of Annantalo's evening groups enrolled in different art courses. The jury meets 1–2 times a year, usually at the end of the year. Participants are recruited to the jury annually.

Performances at Annantalo

The Annantalo assembly hall receives visits by the pearls of the performing arts. We also act as co-producers and offer residencies for creators of new children's performances, including groups selected for Itu Stage (Itujen näyttämö). Through international networks, we have become acquainted with interesting performers and annually invite them to visit Finland to perform and hold workshops.

Annantalo's performances are mainly aimed at children under school age, and there are performances in the mornings, which suits early childhood education groups and the smallest in home care. Weekday morning performances are free. Affordable tickets for evening and weekend performances are sold through Lippu.fi. The Annantalo assembly hall also features performances reserved for Culture Kids, some of which we make open to all during the year.

The year's programme includes four collaborative festivals: Sampo International Puppet Theatre Festival in August,Small Size Days for children aged 0–6 in January, Huraa! Theatre Week in March and Annantalo's children's and young people's performing arts week during Children's Culture Week in May.

In the 2024–25 school year, Annantalo's theme is sound in its various forms, which is why the open Sunday performances are concerts.

In the autumn of 2024, Annantalo's residency guest is Sara Myrberg from Sweden. She is preparing her new children's theatre performance at Annantalo.
