Current news about arts education

Course registration for vacancies for spring semester opens on 5.12. at 9 am

A new art hobby in mind? There may be places available for the spring semester for leisure courses. Registration for available places opens on Thursday 5.12. at 9 am and closes on 6.1.2025.

The opportunity to try a new hobby is not always available if your peers started the hobby as a small child and have progressed from one group level to another. Annantalo's different term-length and school year-length art courses invite you to try making art – even some rarer arts. The courses are suitable for everyone, beginners and long-time enthusiasts alike.

Find your preferred course on the Art Courses search page. The page is available in Finnish only.

Annantalo is committed to promoting accessibility and equality in a goal-oriented manner. Participation in making and experiencing art must be as easy as possible, regardless of disabilities, support needs, mother tongue or the family's financial situation, for example.

Leisure-time art courses

Leisure-time art courses are intended for 4–18-year-old Helsinki residents. The child attends some course with an adult. Art courses are suitable for everyone, both beginners and long-time enthusiasts.

The courses last one term or school year, and the groups meet once a week. The courses are taught by Annantalo's arts educators.

The group size of the leisure-time courses is small, 6–10 participants. The special characteristics of the art form and the course, the age of the participants and the possible need for support affect the group size. Small groups fill up quickly. You can get a cancellation spot by signing up for the queue.

The art course involves participating in an exhibition or preparing a performance either in Annantalo or elsewhere in Helsinki in a manner suitable for the group. The copyrights of amateurs and professionals are respected in exhibition and performance activities.

The cognitive, social or physical characteristics of the participants of art courses are not a barrier to participation. If a child, young person or adult participating with a child needs special support, it is important to contact the Annantalo staff in advance.

If your financial situation is challenging, you can apply for an exemption from the course fee.

When a course has the space, it can be entered for a trial session. Contact the arts education senior planning officer for more information.

The language of instruction in the courses is Finnish, but there is room for all languages and language skills. Language skills and the need for support should be communicated in advance.

For detailed instructions on enrolling in leisure-time courses, applying for a free place, photography and artwork permissions, and the school year schedule, visit the Course and enrolment policies page.

Leisure-time courses and registration can be found on the Art courses page. The page is available in Finnish only.

5x2 arts education for school classes in Helsinki

The City of Helsinki offers a free 5x2 art course for grades 3–6. The goal is for every child in Helsinki to participate in a 5x2 art course once during primary school. Class teachers enrol their classes in the course. A 5x2 art course inspires pupils to make art and expands pupils' experiences and knowledge of what art can be. The pupils are given tips about art hobbies in Helsinki.

The 5x2 art course in a nutshell

The 5x2 art course lasts five weeks. Once a week, there is one art lesson, lasting two school lessons.  During the course, the school class is divided into small groups for different arts subjects. The pupil works with one art subject for all the course sessions under the guidance of an art teacher. During the last course session, the small groups get to familiarise themselves with each other's work and the output of the courses when the pupils practise performing, presenting and accepting art, as well as discussing art. The pupils gain experience of the artistic process.

5x2 course offerings and registration on Kultus.hel.fi

5x2 art courses are held in Annantalo, Caisa, Kanneltalo, Malmitalo, Stoa and Vuotalo.  The different locations offer a wide range of arts and crafts. The art subjects offered to school classes are specified in connection with enrolment.  5x2 arts education is also provided for those in need of special support, as well as in hospital schools.

The up-to-date 5x2 course offerings and registration for the various locations is available at Kultus.hel.fi. The link will take you to the Kultus.hel.fi website.
